Urbis manufactures its products from Glass Reinforced Concrete, a material first developed for architectural cladding systems.

GRC consists of a fine aggregate concrete face mix which is applied under pressure to the mould, followed by a structural mix of special glass fibres and fine concrete. The face mix allows for a wide range of finishes, from smooth to textured stone, with the second layer of glass fibre mix providing great strength.

GRC has important qualities that make it perfect for plant containers: Modern moulding techniques allow the material to be cast into an infinite variety of forms; curved, rounded or square, cubes and linear elements.

Fine finishes
GRC lends itself to creating beautiful surfaces, from the familiar 'modernist' grey concrete to natural stone with an amazing variety of textures and colours. We have an ever expanding palette of applied surfaces that include all the usual masonry colours, and have developed our own range of metallic finishes – rusty iron, copper and bronze. These are achieved using the actual metal bonded into the surface and are finished with a patina solution, as in a bronze foundry. Click here for a closer look at the range of finishes available.

As would be expected from a material developed for use in architecture, GRC has a very long life span with a durable frost and crack resistant surface.

State of the art
These qualities can only be achieved with state of the art process and we have an exceptionally talented team of people to produce the work, most of whom are artists and designers in their own right. As a family firm it's important that we are all on the same wavelength, and they bring an artist's dedication to what they do.

The fact that we design and manufacture our own products gives us control of each aspect of production, and drives technical innovation within the company. This has been important in developing excellent working relationships with the architects and garden designers we serve, and in being responsive to their precise requirements.
